No Rest for the Weary
Thu, 02 Dec

I'll start this post with an excerpt from a book I'm reading called, "Harried with Children" (Karen Scalf Linamen):

"One of the first sacrifices that is made by any parent is privacy. In fact, privacy becomes a thing of the past from the very earliest stages of parenthood, meaning as soon as you announce your pregnancy.

I'll bet you thought that being pregnant simply meant getting ready to have a baby. Not so, pregnancy is actually a non-verbal invitation for total strangers to demand detailed information regarding the most intimate aspects of your life. People you don't know from Adam will walk up to you and ask pointed questions about your ability to correctly implement brith control in the heat of passion ("Did you plan this pregnancy or was it a surprise?"). They'll demand to know how you intend to you your breasts ("Are you going to breast-feed?"). They may even want to know about future management of your reproductive organs ("Do you plan to have more children?").

... And it doesn't get any better. After the baby is born, privacy becomes nothing more than a fond but foggy memory from our preparenting days (kind of like sleep and sex). Regardless of the ages of your children, your offspring will view your body, all of your possesions, each of the hours in your day, and the sum total of your financial assets as belonging to them..."

All of you who hear a voice inside saying, "yes, that's me! I can't believe someone actually put my feelings to words!", you have my sympathies. Although admittedly, raising kids does come with a huge lot of warm-fuzzies and enriching moments, it also means much less time to blog, email, do laundry, scrapbook, vacuum, among other even MORE important things. So I am really very sorry if I owe you an email - the last 2 months were squashed with things like travel, camps, mountains of laundry, weaning, crafting, shopping, eating, cleaning, projects, and MORE mountains of laundry. Just give me some time to get these things in order.
